South Korean memory chip giant SK Hynix has confirmed a major investment to accelerate its DRAM and artificial intelligence (AI) chip production by ordering 30 extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines from Dutch semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML. Valued at approximately $8 billion, this order ranks among ASML's largest in recent years and is set to be fulfilled by the end of 2027 under an expedited delivery schedule.

Strategic Expansion of Production Facilities

The newly acquired EUV machines will be installed at two critical manufacturing sites that form the backbone of SK Hynix's future production strategy. The first is the M15X facility in Cheongju, which focuses heavily on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips. The second is a new industrial complex in Yongin dedicated exclusively to DRAM production.

In a bid to respond more swiftly to market demands, SK Hynix has accelerated the construction timeline of the Yongin complex, advancing the opening of its initial production area from May 2027 to February 2027. The first phase of this project alone commands a substantial budget of approximately $21.5 billion.

Critical Move for AI Chip Manufacturing

Mastery of EUV technology has become a fundamental competitive advantage in today’s semiconductor industry. Without these advanced lithography machines, SK Hynix would struggle to scale production for next-generation AI chips or meet increasing market volumes. The company expresses confidence that its expert teams will integrate the new equipment into existing production lines with minimal disruption.

This strategic investment is particularly vital for SK Hynix as it aims to solidify its leadership in supplying key components to major clients like Nvidia, reinforcing its position in the AI chip market.

Market Dynamics and Competitive Landscape

SK Hynix’s aggressive and rapid industrial expansion contrasts sharply with the more cautious approaches adopted by competitors Samsung and Micron. This significant capacity increase is expected to intensify competition, potentially prompting rival firms to pursue similar investments.
